When My Eyes Opened Again Chapter 02
“What’s wrong, Chloe?
Weren’t you always unwilling to leave Los Angeles because of Brady? Did something happen?”
Ever since the Beaumont family business gradually moved overseas, my parents and sister had basically settled in Australia.
I was the only one who stayed behind in Los Angeles for Brady.
During the three years I was blind, they searched all over the world for doctors who could cure me.
Yet when they finally reached Dr. Eric Miller, Brady was unwilling to let me go for treatment.
His excuse was that he couldn’t bear to have me so far away, telling me to wait until he settled company matters so he could accompany me to Australia, dragging it out again and again ever since.
Only now do I understand that he was never truly too busy to step away.
He simply didn’t want my sight restored, lest I uncover his affair with Carmen.
“I’m fine, Sis. Actually… I can see again. My vision just returned today, so you and Mom and Dad don’t need to worry about me anymore.
“By the way, could you transfer a hundred million into my account? Before I leave, I have some personal matters to handle.”
After hanging up, staring at the bank notification confirming the hundred million deposit, I curled my lips into a faint smile.
Since Brady couldn’t choose between his company and Carmen,
then I would give him a surprise before I left and help him make that choice.
Tying on the white blindfold, I leaned on my cane and walked back to the second-floor banquet hall, only to find Brady flying into a rage at the caregivers and staff, frantically searching for me everywhere.
He rushed forward and pulled me tightly into his arms, panic lacing his voice:
“Sweetheart, where did you run off to?
I was terrified something had happened to you…”
“I just went to the restroom.”
“Even so, you should have had the caregiver go with you. Silly girl, your eyes aren’t well—you can’t wander around by yourself.”
My tone was flat: “Brady, I’m tired.”
He immediately took my hand. “All right, let’s go home.”
The place Brady took me back to wasn’t our home, but a luxury mansion he had spent a fortune building for me three years ago.
Every piece of furniture inside was designed with rounded edges and wrapped in soft padding, fully equipped with basic medical systems and experienced caregivers—catering to my blindness in every single detail.
I once believed he did all this out of love for me.
In reality, he had merely exiled me here so I wouldn’t disrupt his real family.
“Honey, get some good rest. Once I finish up this project, I’ll come stay with you.”
Having dropped me off at the villa gates and finished his instructions, he got into his car and sped off.
As the caregiver was guiding me to my room, I paused for a split second just as a vase plummeted from high above, smashing into pieces a mere three centimeters from my feet.
Immediately after, a sharp burning smell filled the air, and a maid came screaming down the stairs: “Help! There’s a fire!”
Brady rushed back the moment he got the news, with Carmen right by his side.
Seeing me standing before her completely unharmed, a flicker of surprise crossed Carmen’s face.
Brady interrogated the villa’s butler in a chilling voice:
“How could a fire break out out of nowhere? Did someone cut corners when this villa was built?”
Carmen quickly interrupted, “Forget it, Brady. Now isn’t the time to place blame. Since the villa is burned, let’s just bring Ms. Beaumont home to stay with us.”
The firelight cast half of Brady’s face in shadow and half in light.
Only when I cleared my throat did he frown, explaining to me with an unnatural expression:
“Chloe, come home with me.
“Secretary Jenkins’s lease expired a while ago, so she’s been staying at the villa recently. It works out—she can also help take care of you.”
I sneered and deliberately asked, “Did Secretary Jenkins move in all by herself?”
Brady’s expression darkened even further; he gave Carmen’s hand a reassuring squeeze before speaking to me:
“She also has a one-year-old nephew who will be staying temporarily, but don’t worry, they’ll leave once they find a place.”
Yet I knew that the person he planned to send away once a place was found was actually me.
In the car, believing I was “blind,” Brady blatantly texted Carmen on his phone:
[Honey, I’m sorry you and the baby have to suffer for now. I’ll arrange a new place for Chloe as soon as possible.]
Carmen quickly replied:
[Since you’re making me suffer, is there any compensation?]
Brady let out a soft chuckle and typed rapidly, [Is making it up to you in bed enough?]
Carmen looked back from the passenger seat, an ambiguous smile curling on her lips.
Taking the cue, Brady caught her wrist, planted a kiss on the back of her hand, and silently mouthed to her:
“I love you, wife.”
Little did he know, I could see every single bit of it.
