My Fiancé Chose His Friend’s Pregnant Widow And Lost Me Forever Chapter 05
He Chooses Her Again
I move back in with my parents.
Over the next few days, I cancel what I can from the wedding and deal with the refunds and fees.
Ethan comes to the hospital every day.
Sometimes he brings food.
Sometimes money.
Sometimes things for Dad.
I refuse all of it.
Sophie keeps posting.
The baby was moving all night. Maybe he knows Ethan won’t be around for us much longer.
She posts photos of meals he brings her.
Things he buys for the baby.
I stop reading the comments.
Ryan talks to me about test results and recovery.
A few days later, Ethan waits outside my office again.
This time, he isn’t carrying food.
“Can we talk?”
“I have ten minutes.”
He nods.
“I was wrong.”
I wait.
“The wedding. The condo. Your dad. The money. All of it.”
“Okay.”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“I want you to give me a chance to fix this.”
“Then fix it.”
“I will.”
“Has Sophie moved out?”
He doesn’t answer.
“Ethan.”
“She’s at risk of premature labor. I can’t throw her out right now.”
“Of course.”
“I told her she has to move as soon as the baby is stable.”
I look at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
“I do.”
“No. You’re still asking me to wait until Sophie doesn’t need you.”
His phone rings.
He looks at the screen.
Sophie.
He declines the call.
It rings again.
And again.
Finally, I take the phone from his hand and answer it.
Sophie is crying.
“Ethan? My stomach hurts. I don’t know what to do.”
I hold the phone out to him.
He doesn’t take it.
“Claire—”
“Go.”
“I’m not leaving.”
“She’s waiting.”
“She can’t wait.”
He stands there.
Then he takes the phone.
“I’m coming.”
I nod.
For a moment, he looks like he wants me to stop him.
I don’t. He turns and leaves.
This time, watching him go doesn’t hurt the way it did at our wedding.
Maybe because I’m finally done expecting him to choose differently.
