My Fiancé Chose His Friend’s Pregnant Widow And Lost Me Forever Chapter 06
Her Story Starts Falling Apart
A few days later, Ryan shows me something on his phone.
It’s one of Sophie’s posts.
A prenatal checkup report.
“Do you know when her husband died?” he asks.
“Six months ago.”
He points to the gestational age.
“The timing doesn’t make sense.”
I look at the date again.
Then I understand what he’s saying.
If the report is accurate, Sophie got pregnant after Daniel died.
At first, I don’t want to get involved.
I’m already done with Ethan.
Who Sophie’s baby’s father is has nothing to do with me.
Then she posts about me again.
This time, she mentions the trouble at my company and implies I’m using my father’s hospitalization to gain sympathy.
People start contacting my workplace.
Someone even calls the hospital.
That’s when I decide I’m done letting her use my life for content.
I ask a lawyer friend to look into her.
The results come back quickly.
Sophie owns a condo downtown.
She’s been renting it out while living in mine.
Her social media isn’t just personal, either.
She’s signed with an influencer management agency.
And her most successful content series is built around one story:
A pregnant widow loses her husband, and his best friend steps in to take care of her and the baby.
There are brand proposals built around it.
Paid partnerships and campaign pitches.
Even our condo appears in her content.
So does Ethan.
Daniel’s death isn’t just her tragedy anymore.
It’s her brand.
I send everything to Ethan.
He calls me immediately.
“Claire, where did you get this?”
“Does it matter?”
“The pregnancy dates—”
“I saw them.”
He goes quiet.
Then he says, “I’m going to talk to her.”
I don’t ask what happens next.
A few days later, Ethan comes to the hospital.
He looks exhausted.
“I made Sophie move out.”
I say nothing.
“I’m paying back everything I took from the account. I’m dealing with the posts too.”
“Okay.”
He looks at me.
“That’s it?”
“What else do you want?”
“I fixed it.”
“No. You’re cleaning up the mess.”
He flinches.
“Claire—”
“What about what you did to me?”
Ryan walks over before Ethan can answer.
Ethan looks at him, then back at me.
“I know I failed you.”
“At our wedding, you weren’t there.”
“When my father was in the ER, you weren’t there.”
“Claire—”
“When I was being attacked online, you protected her.”
I look at him.
“Every time I needed you, you weren’t there.”
This time, Ethan has nothing to say.
