The Betrayed Mafia Wife Takes Bloody Revenge Chapter 11
Mrs. Cole
Six months after Rafe died, I sold the penthouse.
Too many ghosts.
Too much glass.
Too many rooms designed to impress people I no longer cared about.
I bought a smaller place overlooking the river.
Two bedrooms.
One office.
No marble foyer.
No private elevator.
No portrait of Rafe.
Cole Holdings had its best quarter in three years.
The board stopped asking whether I planned to stay.
They started asking what I planned to do next.
Vivian lost the apartment.
Then the car.
Then most of the jewelry.
The civil case continued.
Her credit collapsed.
Her name disappeared from the guest lists she used to care so much about.
People who once laughed with her at the Belladonna Club stopped answering her calls.
Not because they suddenly loved me.
Because power changes the direction people look.
I understood that better now.
One afternoon, Thomas walked into my office carrying a slim black folder.
“Last piece.”
“What?”
“Vivian’s settlement.”
I opened it.
She had agreed to repay the remaining amount over time.
Almost everything Rafe spent on her would return to the estate.
I signed.
Thomas watched me.
“You know, everyone thought you were going to fall apart.”
“I know.”
“Rafe did too.”
“I know.”
He hesitated.
“Did you?”
“Did I what?”
“Think you couldn’t live without him?”
I looked out the window.
For a long time, yes.
Rafe had found me when I was seventeen.
Poor.
Hungry.
Brilliant enough to know I wanted more, but not yet powerful enough to reach it.
He had fed me.
Paid my tuition.
Bought my first laptop.
Sat outside my exams with coffee.
When I got into graduate school, he lifted me off the ground and spun me around until I screamed.
“I told you,” he had said.
“You stick with me, Elena.”
“I’ll take care of you forever.”
For years, I confused gratitude with debt.
Then debt with love.
Then love with surrender.
That was my mistake.
Not loving him.
Believing love meant I had to disappear inside him.
“No,” I said finally.
“I thought I owed him.”
Thomas nodded.
“And now?”
I closed the folder.
“Now we’re even.”
He left.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I opened the message.
It was from Vivian.
A screenshot.
Mason’s parole eligibility date.
Below it:
PLEASE.
TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT.
I stared at the screen.
Once, she had sat on my husband’s lap and called me a parasite.
Once, she had smiled while telling me she slept with him in my hospital bed.
Once, she had believed I was too weak to fight back.
She had been wrong about one thing.
I was never weak.
I simply preferred not to fight battles with my own hands.
I deleted the message.
Outside my office, the executive floor was quiet.
People moved when I moved.
Waited when I spoke.
Not because I was Rafe Cole’s widow.
Not anymore.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Mrs. Cole?”
My new chief of staff stepped inside.
“The board is ready for you.”
I stood.
For years, that name had meant I belonged to him.
Now it meant something else.
I picked up my files.
“Let them wait another minute.”
She blinked.
Then smiled.
“Yes, Mrs. Cole.”
I looked once at the city below.
Rafe used to tell me I would be nothing without him.
Vivian believed it.
His friends believed it.
For a while, I believed it too.
They were all wrong.
I walked into the boardroom.
And this time, every man in the room stood when I entered.
