My Grandson’s Fiancée Called Me His Mistress Chapter 08
The Grave by the Coast
I’ve barely settled into the car when Lucas runs after me and grabs my arm through the open window, sobbing that he was wrong and never should have let a woman come between us.
I glance at the tears staining my sleeve and signal for the driver to hand him a tissue.
“Alright, alright. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
“I’m tired. I want to go home and sleep.”
I don’t wait for him to let go of my arm before pulling the door shut. He drops his hand fast, and the car pulls away, leaving him standing alone under the streetlight, shoulders sagging.
The next morning, I fly to the coast. The anniversary of Vincent’s death is approaching, and that quiet seaside town was always his favorite place in the world.
I walk slowly along the old boardwalk, remembering the first time I saw him. He scowled as if he were entering a hostile business meeting instead of an arranged first date. Somewhere along the way, it became something real.
He was a stubborn, difficult man his whole life, impossible to deal with for anyone but me. With me, he always found a way to bend.
“Hey, old man. Give it a few more years and come get me, would you? I’ve been bored out of my mind since you left.”
Back home, Lucas realizes I’m gone and starts pacing around the kitchen.
“Dad, where’s Nonna? She told me she’d see me today.”
Marcus doesn’t even look up from his coffee. “Gone. Every year around this time, she goes down to the coast. You didn’t know that?”
Lucas didn’t. Of course he didn’t.
Marcus doesn’t hold back, not even for Lucas.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t even have the nerve to ask her for help right now.”
“Everything you have, the money, the name, every advantage over people your age, came from what she built with her own hands. You resent her for not having more time for you, but you have no idea what she sacrificed.”
“She spent the best years of her life keeping this family alive and barely stopped to breathe. When your grandfather died, everything fell on her shoulders. She never even had time to grieve him properly. This family survived because of her.”
“You don’t have to love her, Lucas. But you damn well better respect her. What you did was a disgrace.”
Right on cue, Sera storms in, heels clicking, chased by a couple of security guards who couldn’t stop her at the gate.
The second she spots Lucas, she throws herself into his arms and acts like the injured party.
“Lucas, it’s been weeks since you’ve come to see me! We’re married, and your own security won’t even let me through the door. Are you hiding another woman in this house?”
“That’s enough!” Lucas shoves her back, hard enough that she nearly stumbles.
“You’re constantly accusing me of something! Is this about your husband cheating on you overseas? Is that why you’re throwing this at me now?”
“What is wrong with you? Do you think every man is like that married sugar daddy you had in Southeast Asia?!”
