The Don’s Heiress Won’t Choose Him Again Chapter 03

That night, Serafina vanished under strange circumstances.

Roman burst into my room in the middle of the night, his eyes red, his hand closing around my throat.

“Where is Sera? Where did you take her?”

“I already agreed to be your husband. Why are you still going after her?”

“She’s afraid of the dark. What’s she supposed to do at night without me?”

I couldn’t breathe. I clawed at his wrist.

“Are you insane? What does Sera’s disappearance have to do with me?”

Roman’s face was livid. “Who else would it be?”

“You’re jealous of how close I am to Sera. You were afraid I’d back out, so you had someone take her, didn’t you?”

“I’m begging you, bring her back. Her wound hasn’t fully healed. Once we’re married, I’ll send her away!”

I slid the pearl-handled revolver from beneath my pillow and leveled it at the space between his eyebrows.

“Let go.”

Roman’s hand froze on my throat. His pupils shrank.

“Roman. Listen to me carefully.”

“I did not choose you. Serafina’s disappearance has nothing to do with me. Believe me or don’t.”

“You have two options. Turn around and walk out that door. Or let me put a hole in your skull.”

Roman stared down the barrel of the gun. Finally, he released me, turned, and left.

The next morning, Roman brought Serafina back. She looked wretched, collapsed in his arms as though she’d been through hell that night.

Roman’s face was dark as he strode over to me.

“Valentina, if you have a problem with me, come at me. Why do you keep going after Sera?”

“If you keep this up, I will never marry you!”

Then he was gone, carrying Sera without looking back.

I watched him leave and laughed coldly.

Even now, he still thought I’d chosen him.

That night, Serafina came to my room. Alone. Uninvited.

She looked at me, her face contorted with something bitter and furious. “You were reborn too, weren’t you?”

Under the lamplight, her features were twisted with jealousy.

Her chest heaved. Her voice came out high and sharp. “Why does every good thing in the world fall in your lap?”

“You’re the Moretti heir. You had everything the moment you were born. You give orders and the world obeys.”

“And me? I’m just the housekeeper’s daughter. I grew up under someone else’s roof, always having to read the room and watch what I said.”

“The only thing I ever had was Roman’s love!”

Her voice cracked into something like a sob.

“Why do you have to take even that from me? Valentina, you already have so much. Why are you so greedy?”

“If it weren’t for you, Roman would never have wanted to send me abroad!”

I watched her hysteria with cold detachment.

“Serafina. Did you come here tonight just to spout this crap?”

Something wild flared up behind her eyes. “I will not give up!”

Before the words were out, she lunged at me, seizing my wrist, dragging me toward the stone balustrade of the second-floor gallery.

I realized what she meant to do and fought back, wrenching against her grip.

“Serafina, you’re insane! Let go!”

But she was consumed. Like a rabid dog, she pulled me toward the railing with everything she had.

In the violent struggle, we went over the balustrade together and fell straight down.

For a moment I felt nothing. Then the pain hit—shattering and breath-stealing, as if my insides had been torn apart.

Beside me, Serafina groaned in agony.

Within seconds, the guards came pouring in.

Roman took one look at Serafina on the ground and his eyes went bloodshot. He raised a fist and swung at me.

Every inch of my body was in agony. I couldn’t move, couldn’t dodge. I could only watch the fist come toward my face.

A hand shot out from the side and caught his wrist mid-swing.

Dominic.

His expression was terrifyingly cold.

“Roman. Lay one finger on her. I dare you.”

Roman’s eyes burned. He tried to jerk his arm free, but Dominic twisted it back and pinned him to the floor.

Even pinned to the floor, he kept screaming at me. “Valentina, what the hell do you want?!”

“What did Sera ever do to deserve this? How much longer are you going to torment her?”

I pushed myself up on my hands, every muscle in agony, and looked at him. My gaze was ice.

“Roman. You’d better remember this night.”

“When the coronation banquet ends, you’ll no longer be a Moretti. Come at me then, and getting pinned to the floor is going to look like mercy.”

Roman was stunned for a second, still trying to say something more, when the other guards rushed forward and clapped their hands over his mouth.

“Boss, shut up. If the Don sees you hurting Valentina over Serafina, you’re finished!”
