The Don’s Heiress Won’t Choose Him Again Chapter 04

“Boss, take Sera and lay low. Come back for the coronation. Cool your head first!”

They bundled Roman and Serafina into a black Cadillac and drove them out that night.

Dominic crouched down and carefully helped me up from the floor.

He didn’t speak. But I could feel the hand at my waist trembling slightly.

I didn’t tell the Don what had happened. I intended to handle Serafina—and Roman—myself.

When the succession gala is over, my father threw a magnificent banquet in my honor.

The ballroom was packed with his allies—heads of allied families, business partners, everyone who mattered.

I scanned the room. Dominic wasn’t there.

He had to be present tonight. I pulled out my phone and called him.

He picked up almost immediately, his low, familiar voice coming through the line.

“Where are you?”

He laughed softly. “What, do you really need me to watch the Don announce Roman as your future husband?”

His voice had gone a little rough.

“Valentina, that’s cruel.”

I tightened my grip on the phone and left no room for argument. “Yes. I want you here.”

“Are you coming or not?”

There was a brief silence on the other end. Then: “All right. I’ll be there.”

I had barely hung up when Roman walked in with one arm around Serafina.

The guests began to whisper, their eyes flicking between us.

The second-most senior of the seven guards was the first to react.

“Boss, what are you doing?”

His voice was low, warning. “Tonight is Valentina’s coronation. The Don is about to announce your engagement to Valentina. Keep your distance from Serafina.”

Roman gave a mocking smile and pulled Serafina closer.

“Marriage?”

“I came here tonight to tell the Don something. I don’t love Valentina.”

“I will not marry her!”

A wave of shocked murmuring rippled through the ballroom.

The smile froze on my father’s face. His eyes turned sharp as blades on Roman.

Roman pressed on. “Once the Don finishes his announcement, I’ll be severing all ties with the Moretti family.”

The other guards immediately began to move, trying to talk him down.

But his face was cold. “Don’t bother. I won’t marry a woman I don’t love. I’d rather be dead.”

Serafina stood beside him, and she stole a smug little glance at me.

As if to say: See? I won. In the end, Roman chose me.

I laughed under my breath.

Roman. You really didn’t disappoint me.

There really was nothing you wouldn’t do for Serafina.

I picked up my glass of red wine and took a slow, deliberate sip. “Are you finished?”

Roman blinked. He clearly hadn’t expected that reaction.

I set the glass down. “Roman Castellano. The Moretti family is not a place you walk in and out of as you please. I’ll deal with tonight’s little performance personally.”

I turned to my father, my tone even. “Papa. Please continue. Don’t let a dog that wants to run away spoil the evening for our guests.”

My father looked at me. A hint of approval flickered in his eyes.

He raised his glass, gave a small nod to the guests, and continued as if nothing had happened.

The coronation was formally underway when Dominic finally entered the ballroom.

He walked straight to my side and set a manila envelope on the table by my hand. His voice dropped low. “The thing you asked me to look into. I’ve got it.”

I opened the folder and only had to glance through it before closing it again.

Surveillance stills, wire transfers, the middleman who’d hired the shooters—everything pointed back to Serafina Voss.

Serafina had orchestrated the entire shooting.

The point was to get herself “wounded” so Roman would take her side completely.

I slipped the folder into my clutch and let a cold smile touch my lips.

Good. Very good.

Dominic watched my expression but asked nothing. He simply sat down quietly beside me.

The lights dimmed. My father took the stage and thanked his guests with due formality.

“Thank you all for being here tonight, at my daughter’s coronation. I also have an important announcement to make—my daughter’s marriage.”

“When I step down, When I step down, my daughter will lead the Moretti family alongside my seventh adopted son, Dominic Falcone. And he will become Valentina Moretti’s husband.”

Absolute silence.

No one had expected the name to be Dominic.

“What?”

Roman shot up from his chair.
