The Heiress’s Revenge Chapter 14
Kieran’s words carried clear to Jasper and Dax.
Jasper’s usual composure cracked. Dax stopped smiling.
They’d always thought my “hardship” was exaggerated. My adoptive parents weren’t wealthy like them, sure, but they’d given me a decent life.
I looked at Kieran. Then slowly swept my gaze across their suddenly silent faces. Like a blade.
“Kieran. You’ve got it wrong. I’ve never been choosing ‘willing or not.'”
I turned toward the main hall. “What I’m choosing,” I said, voice level, “is the rest of my life. Keep being told I never suffered, so I should step aside for everyone else. Or—”
I paused. Faced each of them.
“Collect. Every last bit of suffering. With interest.”
My father seized Skylar and shoved her toward Greyson. “Greyson! The ceremony’s starting. Take Skylar and marry her. The ceremony goes on. Today, Wentworth gives only one daughter. Skylar.”
This had been his calculation all along. If I defied him, the three-day deadline he’d leaked would be pinned on Skylar. He’d keep his word and tie Rockwell to Wentworth.
The words barely left his mouth. The main doors swung open.
The air in the hall seized.
“I was told there was a celebration today. Why does everyone look like they’ve seen a ghost?”
“Father?” My father found his voice. “You’re back early…”
“If I hadn’t come early,” Grandfather said, “would you have sent Thea away too? The way you sent away her mother?”
My father trembled.
The bodyguard beside Grandfather pressed play on a recording device.
“That car of the wife’s—I handled it clean… brake line shaved just right. That sharp curve downhill will do the job. She had to go digging into the switched-at-birth thing…”
