The Wife He Tried To Erase Chapter 08
In the footage, that slender figure vanished into the shadows and never emerged again.
Nicholas shut off the iPad irritably and tossed it aside.
“Send a few people to search along the riverbank. Also, cancel all her supplementary cards.”
He leaned back against the chair, rubbed his brow, and spoke in a cold voice.
“Without money, she won’t last three days out there.”
The bodyguard accepted the order and left.
Nicholas did not take the matter too seriously.
For the past three years, although Emilia appeared obedient on the surface, that stubbornness in her bones had never been completely worn away.
This was probably another one of her little tricks to attract attention, childish and ridiculous, like throwing away her ring.
She could not live without him.
Or rather, she could not live without those expensive medical bills.
For Rachel’s life, Emilia would crawl back if she had to.
However, three days passed.
The gates of the Gallagher’s residence remained tightly shut, and that familiar figure was nowhere to be seen.
A week went by.
It was as if Emilia had vanished from the face of the earth—no spending records, no hotel check-ins, and even the so-called lawyer’s phone, which used to ring incessantly, had become a dead number.
Nicholas began to feel a vague sense of restlessness.
This restlessness peaked every night when he returned to his bedroom and faced the cold emptiness.
No matter how late it was before, as long as he came home, Emilia would always leave a light on, and sometimes, to please him, she would even pour him a glass of warm water despite her trembling hands.
Now, there was only endless darkness.
“Nicky…”
A soft, delicate call broke the deathly silence.
Nicholas looked up and saw Valentina standing at the top of the stairs on the second floor.
She was holding a cup of hot milk, dressed in a light purple silk robe.
It was Emilia’s favorite, a gift from Nicholas on their wedding anniversary two years ago.
Valentina’s long hair cascaded down, and under the light, she truly resembled a young Emilia for a fleeting moment.
“I noticed you haven’t been sleeping well these days, so I warmed some milk for you on purpose.”
Valentina walked down barefoot, her expression timid and somewhat ingratiating.
“Emmy hasn’t come back yet? Maybe she really wants some time to calm down… Nicky, don’t be too angry. How can a home be without a hostess? I could…”
She walked up to Nicholas, a strong scent of Chanel perfume emanating from her.
The scent was overwhelming.
Emilia never wore perfume; she only carried a faint smell of paint and medicine.
Nicholas looked at the face before him, his gaze slowly dropping to the robe that once belonged to Emilia.
Suddenly, a wave of physical nausea surged up his throat.
“Take it off.” Nicholas’s voice was as cold as ice.
Valentina froze, a shy blush appearing on her face as her fingers reached for the collar: “Nicky… Here? The servants are all asleep, so I suppose it’s fine…”
“I said, take off the robe.”
Nicholas suddenly stood up and brushed aside her outstretched hand.
The glass fell to the floor, and hot milk splashed all over Valentina.
“Ah!” Valentina screamed, her face turning pale with fright at the hostility in Nicholas’s eyes.
“Who allowed you to touch her things?”
Nicholas looked down at her from above, his eyes stripped of their usual indulgence, replaced by naked disgust. “Do you think you deserve to wear this robe?”
Valentina trembled all over, tears instantly welling up in her eyes: “Nicky… I just saw the robe lying there unused and was afraid it would get ruined… Besides, Emmy doesn’t care anymore, I just…”
“Get out.”
Nicholas pointed at the door, unwilling to spare her another glance. “Don’t make me say it twice. Get out.”
Valentina had never seen Nicholas so furious.
She dared not argue further, covered her face, and ran out crying.
The hall returned to its deathly silence.
Nicholas stood where he was, staring at the milk stains on the floor, but the suffocating feeling in his chest did not dissipate with Valentina’s departure.
