I Married The Don 3 Years While He Kept His Mistress 7 Years Chapter 09
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
I dropped to my knees, almost numb with despair, and reached for the border collie’s breath.
A dark pool of blood spread beneath him. He wasn’t moving anymore.
A few feet away, a man stood with a gun in his hand, a faint wisp of smoke still curling from the barrel.
Lorenzo’s bodyguard.
Enzo.
His face was blank.
He just lowered his arm and slid the gun back into the holster at his waist. Like he’d just stepped on a bug and kept walking.
“It hurts so much~”
Chiara was crying, her voice high and trembling. She leaned against Lorenzo, lifting her injured leg for him to see.
“That mutt might have rabies… I need to go to the hospital for shots…”
“Don, I’m scared—can you—”
She looked up at him with those big, pleading eyes.
But Lorenzo wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking at me.
At me, kneeling in a pool of blood, cradling that border collie in my arms.
He stepped forward, his suit pants brushing through the splatter on the ground. He didn’t even flinch.
“Let’s go home. Everyone’s waiting for us.”
He reached out his hand, sleeve rolled up just enough to reveal the lean muscle of his forearm.
A drop of dark red clung to the Greco family signet ring on his wrist.
I stared at it for a second. Then I bit down—hard.
The taste of blood filled my mouth, and I didn’t let go.
Lorenzo didn’t make a sound this time. His jaw went tight, veins standing out on his neck, but he didn’t pull away.
When he finally drew his arm back, he looked down at the teeth marks oozing blood on his wrist. His voice was flat.
“It was just an animal. It bit Chiara. If you want another one, I’ll buy you one tomorrow.”
I looked around. Broken glass everywhere. Overturned cages. Kibble and litter scattered across the floor.
Trembling, I gathered the cats and dogs I could still find and put them back into their carriers, one by one.
My hair was a mess. My eyes were red. His blood was still smeared across my lips.
I looked straight at Lorenzo.
“Why?”
Before Lorenzo could answer, Chiara cut in.
“Don’t start this again, little Donna. I just came here because I wanted to adopt a pet. But every one I liked, they wouldn’t sell.”
She pouted, all dressed up in her perfect outfit, wearing that deliberately cute tone.
“The Don thinks you’re just being difficult. That you’re targeting me on purpose, so—”
I turned to the girl on shift.
She was crouched in the corner, crying, shaking her head.
“I told them—those animals all have owners. They’re just boarded here. I can’t sell them, no matter how much they offered.”
“And the ones that don’t have owners—she didn’t like any of them…”
I understood then.
Chiara came here to get back at me. While I wasn’t around.
I looked at the small body on the ground, and the tears finally broke loose.
He’d only been here three days. I hadn’t even given him a name yet.
I decided on one just yesterday.
Fortunato.
Lucky.
I should have left him on the streets. At least then—he’d still be alive.
Lorenzo saw me fall apart. He stepped closer, ignoring the bite mark on his arm.
“If you can’t let it go, I’ll find you a bigger place tomorrow. Better facilities, a real vet on staff. You can start over—”
“I don’t want it.” I cut him off.
One word at a time.
“Lorenzo Greco.”
“I hate you.”
