His hands shook more and more violently the longer he wiped.
Lauren’s body had already gone rigid.
When Rachel was carried out, both of her hands were still shielding her abdomen.
The moment Luke saw the slight curve of her belly, he dropped to his knees and coughed up blood.
He had wanted that child so badly.
After learning Rachel was pregnant, he had bought more than a dozen baby bracelets, then decided none of them were good enough and planned to design one himself.
Before they went out to dinner the night before, he had told his brothers, “When I bring her back tomorrow, I’ll tell her. Boy or girl, I don’t care. I just want the baby to be healthy.”
He would never get to say it.
Henry lifted Molly out of Hannah’s arms.
The child was soaked through, still gripping that half of a ribbon in her hand. It took Henry a long time to pry it loose.
Then he tucked cinnamon candies into every pocket of her coat, one by one.
“Molly.”
“Look at Daddy.”
“I promised I’d buy you candy. I didn’t forget.”
“Have one, okay?”
No one around him made a sound.
Then my father suddenly threw back his head and let out a cry that made everyone else look away.
Holding my mother, he called her name, Claire, over and over.
They had been married for almost thirty years.
My mother had married my father at twenty-two. She had run the family foundation with him, raised their children, and cared for my grandmother. She had never once embarrassed him in public.
