My Unborn Daughter Warned Me Not To Marry Him Chapter 11

Dawn

Five years pass.

Dawn’s fifth birthday. A big fat envelope shows up on the doorstep.

I open it after she’s asleep.

Property deeds. Bank cards. A notarized transfer agreement. An irrevocable trust in Dawn’s name.

Josh drank himself into cancer. Before he died, he signed every single thing he owned over to me and Dawn.

The last part of the will is handwritten.

“Autumn,

These last few months, I keep dreaming about the day I told you I loved you.

The two of us hiding under an awning in the rain. Me reaching for your hand, scared out of my mind you’d pull away. You didn’t.

I swore I’d always protect you.

Turns out I was the thing you needed protecting from.

I’m so sorry.

If there’s a next life,

Autumn, I hope you never meet me again.”

I read it once.

I fold it back up.

Little feet padding across the floor. Dawn’s messy bedhead pokes around the corner.

“Mommy? Who’s that letter from?”

I kiss the top of her head. Smile.

“An old friend, baby. Just saying hi.”

I toss the letter into the shredder on my desk. The blades whir. Paper turns to confetti.

No use looking back.

I just hold Dawnie’s hand.

And keep walking forward.
