He Chose Her Over Me So I Chose Myself Chapter 08

Grant bolted out of the breakfast room.

He shoved open the makeup suite at the end of the hall. It was completely empty. No wedding dress. No jewelry. No makeup artist. Nothing.

“June!”

No answer.

His phone vibrated wildly. Guest replies, reporters’ questions, and demands from board members all flooded in.

“Are these screenshots real?”

“Were you actually planning to marry Camille?”

“Was the Mercer family’s charity branding also a lie?”

Grant’s expression finally cracked.

Mr. and Mrs. Mercer arrived in a rush. My mother swept one glance over the empty venue, her voice shaking with rage.

“Did she have to make this so ugly? Couldn’t she have said something at home?”

My father’s face was hard. “She’s always been extreme. We gave her so much, and she still doesn’t know the meaning of gratitude.”

Grant said nothing. He turned and ran for the parking lot.

He sped back to the apartment, running red lights, his hands shaking so badly he missed the keyhole several times.

At last the door opened.

My half of the closet was empty. The glass art books were gone from the shelves. The drawing tools and glass cutters by the wall had vanished.

The desk was so clean there wasn’t even a scrap of paper left.

It was as if I had never lived there at all.

Grant stood still for a few seconds, then immediately called his bank manager.

“Check the joint account June and I share. Now.”

Keys clattered on the other end of the line.

The manager’s tone remained courteous and clear.

“Mr. Hale, the funds belonging to Miss June Mercer in that account were fully transferred out three days ago. The account was then closed in accordance with procedure.”

Grant stood motionless in the empty room, phone still in his hand.

Three days ago.

This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment runaway bride. I wasn’t waiting for him to come find me and coax me back.

I had planned it all long in advance.

I meant to disappear from his world completely.
