He Chose Her Over Me So I Chose Myself Chapter 35
He spoke slowly, as if every word scraped his throat.
“I treated your love like something that would never expire.”
“It expired.”
“I know.”
Grant lowered his head.
“The Beacon Hill house is back on the market. I never gave Camille the key to the main floor. Not once.”
I didn’t ask who the house would go to.
The floor-to-ceiling windows, the downstairs apartment, and the compensation he had offered too late—none of it had anything to do with me anymore.
He raised his eyes to mine, his voice rough.
“If I hadn’t taken the pass from you back then—”
“But you did.”
I cut him off.
“Grant, you didn’t lose me because of one final mistake. You lost me because you kept making the wrong choice for years, and you believed I would never leave.”
His eyes reddened.
“Is there really no chance left?”
“No.”
This time, I didn’t give him an answer that sounded like maybe someday.
Grant stood in the snow for a long time before finally nodding.
“I’m sorry.”
“I heard you.”
I tightened my hold on the tube that belonged to me.
Whether to forgive him was my choice.
His apology was no longer a question I was required to answer.
After Grant left, Eli came out of the studio.
He didn’t ask what we had said. He simply drew out the dome sketch and held it up to the light.
“The library’s front entrance is missing a stained-glass window.”
I stared at him.
“You think this design could work?”
“I think that’s for the review committee to decide.”
He smiled and slid the drawing back into my hands.
“Would you like to submit something?”
