He Left Me For My Sister Now He Begs For Me Back Chapter 05

He did come back.

After the party, I was sitting in the hotel suite, taking the pins from my hair, when Sebastian let himself in with the temporary keycard our families had given him. He was holding a small box of osmanthus candy.

It had been my favorite when I was a child.

He set the box on the vanity.

“Adeline, are you upset about tonight?”

I met my own eyes in the mirror.

“Why would you ask that?”

He hesitated.

“Victoria wearing your dress, and then what happened at your party…”

His voice trailed off.

I managed a smile.

“So you noticed.”

Sebastian froze.

I rarely used that tone with him.

After a moment of silence, he tried to explain. “Her health is poor. Everyone just wants to make her happy. The fencing was the guests’ idea. Don’t take it to heart.”

I asked, “And you? Were you just another guest?”

He didn’t answer.

My heart sank, inch by inch.

After a long moment, he reached out, as if to pat my head the way he did when we were children.

“Adeline, you’ve always been more generous than Victoria. Don’t let one party drive a wedge between you.”

There it was again.

Everyone loved to tell me: you’re generous, you’re steady, you’re sensible.

As if those words weren’t praise, but shackles.

I smiled faintly.

“I understand.”

He visibly relaxed, clearly thinking the matter was settled.

Before he left, he said, just as he always did, “I’ll take you out to the countryside to see the peach blossoms in a few days.”

I nodded.

“All right.”

Three days later, he asked to change his fiancée.
