Ken lowered his voice.

Their voices trailed off, growing quieter and quieter.
Because Charles’s expression was growing darker and darker.
Jeffery was still muttering: “And that kid Richard—I looked into him specifically. He’s the heir to the Soros family. Not exactly the desperate type we imagined.”
Charles stood rooted to the spot, his head buzzing.
Heir.
Not short on money.
Then why had he volunteered himself?

The music playing through the venue was something light and slow.

Charles went still. As if every ounce of strength had been drained from his body.
Mark came up and patted his shoulder.

She wasn’t trying to provoke him. She had actually married someone else.
