At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 04

June was holding my hand when Graham finally got the call from the police.

“Mr. Mercer, your wife suffered a placental abruption while in custody and was rushed to the hospital. The hospital attempted to contact you multiple times.”

He tightened his grip on the phone.

“The baby?”

There was a brief, professional pause on the other end.

“Female infant, Iris. Stillborn.”

All the blood drained from Graham’s face.

He remembered the two calls he’d rejected. Sadie had been crying, terrified Nora would come back for revenge, and he had silenced his phone to comfort her.

He rushed to the hospital, didn’t even wait for the elevator, and ran up three flights of stairs. When he saw the bloodstains not yet scrubbed clean outside the operating room, he slammed his fist into the wall, splitting his knuckles.

“It’s because I didn’t answer…”

Diane and Paul arrived soon after, with Sadie trailing behind them, holding Clara.

“Graham, this was just an accident,” Sadie said softly. “No one wanted this to happen.”

Brooke frowned. “Nora’s always been so healthy. How could she suddenly be this fragile? Maybe she worked herself up—”

“Shut up!”

Graham spun around, his eyes bloodshot.

Clara, startled, began to cry. Sadie instinctively recoiled, as if she no longer recognized the man in front of her.

“She lost our child, it wasn’t some *accident*!” Graham roared. “That was my daughter, too!”

He shoved open the door to my hospital room.

It was empty.

The blanket was folded neatly. The nightstand was clear. Not even a discharge paper remained.

Graham grabbed a passing nurse.

“Where is she? She just had surgery. Who authorized her release?”

The nurse glanced at the chart.

“She was stable and insisted on being discharged. The paperwork was in order, and someone was with her.”

“Who?”

The nurse flipped to the last page of the file.

“The social worker noted that Nora Whitmore was discharged into the care of a Ms. June Park.”
