The Diary Of An Unloved Wife Chapter 02
When I woke up this time, there was absolutely no one around.
I discharged myself from the hospital.
When I got home, Harlow was curled up on the sofa, hugging my throw pillow, looking for all the world like this house already belonged to her.
Maggie was standing to the side, telling Beckett amusing stories from Harlow’s childhood.
The atmosphere was great.
It would have been even better if I, the intruder, hadn’t barged in.
I bumped into the vase in the foyer when I walked in.
They all looked over.
The atmosphere instantly froze.
Maggie stood up somewhat awkwardly. “Iris is back. I’ll go make some tea.”
Harlow looked displeased and gave the man a wounded look.
Beckett simply leaned back on the sofa, playing with Harlow’s fingers as he stopped her.
“Maggie, there’s no need.”
“From now on, Maggie no longer works for my family. She is Harlow’s mother.”
Maggie didn’t dare to look at me.
I didn’t bother making a fool of myself by joining them and headed straight to the study.
I still had some enrollment documents to fill out for the doctoral program. I had to report there next week, so I needed to hurry.
The moment I turned on the computer in the study, Beckett’s iMessage window popped up on the screen.
He must have logged in at some point and forgotten to log out.
I didn’t want to pry into their privacy.
But I couldn’t help catching a glimpse of the last sentence in the only pinned chat box:
“I’m pregnant.”
My eyes stayed locked on it for a long time.
It wasn’t until my tears were about to fall that I used my stiff hand to click into it.
The timestamp was a little after eleven o’clock at night, two days ago.
I remembered that day was my birthday.
I had baked a cake myself, wanting to ease the tension between us.
I waited all day.
And finally waited for him to come home from work.
But before I could even bring the cake out, he looked at a message and left in a hurry.
No explanation.
He didn’t even look at me.
That day, I ate an entire cake by myself. The frosting was mixed with tears, and I couldn’t taste any sweetness.
So it was because Harlow was pregnant.
I couldn’t help but scroll up.
They talked about everything.
Harlow took a picture of a flower.
He said it was beautiful, and the next day he ordered a whole truckload of them for her.
Harlow said she wanted to see the snow.
He told her to wait, and the next day their location showed they were in Aspen.
Harlow said she was treated unfairly at work.
He told her he had her back, and the next day Harlow’s boss was fired.
Incident after incident.
It was all proof of how much he doted on Harlow—a kind of love that astonished me because it felt so foreign.
I remembered in the past, when I was wronged and went to him crying.
He would just look at me with cold eyes and tell me to solve it myself.
If I wanted to see the snow or flowers.
He would just call me dramatic.
It turned out he wasn’t incapable of romance; it was just because I wasn’t Harlow.
I expressionlessly closed the computer.
I filled out the documents.
Just as I submitted them, the study door was pushed open.
Beckett leaned against the doorway, wearing that familiar mocking smirk on his lips.
“Writing another long message to Felix?”
My hand paused, and I quickly cleared the files related to the doctoral program.
When I looked up, my eyes were filled with exhaustion.
“If you say so.”
He straightened his posture. His lips instantly tightened, and his voice dropped low. “Say that again.”
That was his signal that he was angry.
“Didn’t you just say that? You’re still mad even when I agree with you?”
I spoke after a two-second silence.
He was expressionless, expecting me to yield like I used to.
I used to be so afraid of him getting angry.
To coax him, I had even gone so far as to deliver gifts to his mistresses.
To make him happy, I didn’t dare to show a single trace of dissatisfaction toward them.
But now, I realized how stupid I was.
And I didn’t want to coax him anymore.Â
