The day I left Atlanta, I took only one suitcase.
After my plane landed in Portland, I slept for more than twelve hours in a hotel near the airport. The next morning, when I got out of bed, my vision went black. I came to in a hospital bed.
The doctor said I was suffering from long-term insomnia and malnutrition, and that my body still hadn’t recovered from the miscarriage. I had to stay and recover.
That week, no so-called family sat at my bedside.
But the nurses remembered that I got cold easily and brought me an extra blanket every night. Before the elderly woman in the next bed was discharged, she had her daughter bring me a bowl of hot soup.
“Even if you’re out here alone, you still need to eat properly.”
Holding the warm bowl, I started to cry.
It turned out that simple kindness required none of the things I had endured.
I didn’t have to swallow humiliation.
I didn’t have to prove I was being reasonable.
I didn’t have to pass anyone’s test.
After I was discharged, I contacted a landscape design firm I had turned down six months earlier.
Back then, they had invited me to move to Portland, but Evan had said Jude needed stability, so I’d given up the opportunity.
