His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 15
A year later, I was officially promoted to Design Director at the Portland firm.
At the celebration, my boss raised a glass and said, in front of the whole team, “Mara’s strength has never been just her talent. She knows how to hold her ground in the middle of chaos, and when everyone else is ready to give up, she’s the one who brings a project back on track.”
As applause rose around me, I didn’t lower my head or instinctively wonder if I deserved it.
I just smiled and accepted the letter of appointment.
For the first time, I accepted recognition without flinching.
It turned out I wasn’t humorless.
And I wasn’t someone who could only stay in a relationship by enduring.
The truth was that I had wasted too much of myself trying to please people who only ever hurt me.
Before the celebration ended, a coworker sent me a message.
“We prepared a little surprise for you. Is that okay? If you don’t like it, we’ll cancel right away.”
I stared at the sentence for a few seconds, then smiled and replied, “That’s okay.”
When I pushed open the door to the private dining room, applause and cheers broke out.
Someone handed me flowers. Someone else pulled out a chair for me. On the table sat a cake and a bowl of my favorite seafood chowder.
