Before Cassidy’s livestream even began, my company had received twenty-seven complaint emails.
People pasted screenshots from the baseball field clip into their messages and demanded to know why the firm would let “a woman who hates children” design public spaces.
The investors for the children’s rehabilitation garden we were developing requested an emergency meeting.
In the conference room, the large screen was frozen on the image of me taking off my wedding ring.
One of the representatives looked at me.
“Ms. Hale, we’re not here to judge your private life. But this project serves children, so we have to consider public perception.”
The familiar wording took me right back to that email in Atlanta, when my client had postponed our contract.

I closed my project binder.
“I understand that you need to assess risk.”
But before I could say more, my boss spoke up.
“Then let’s assess the full facts.”
She pushed my design proposal to the center of the table.
“Every client review Mara has received since joining our firm, every safety inspection she has passed, is in here. A privately edited online video has nothing to do with her professional ability.”
