He Moved His Lover In I Moved My Money Out Chapter 06
Before the police arrived, Graham bent down and picked up the papers. He crumpled them in his fist, his eyes red, then tore them in half right in front of me.
“I won’t sign. Ten years of marriage doesn’t end just because you say it does.”
The next day, the municipal arts center I had been working with sent notice: because of my “unstable domestic situation, which may affect project performance,” my status as lead designer was suspended.
No one but the Whitmores could have gotten a committee to approve a reason that absurd.
My anger lasted only a few minutes before I saw exactly what he was doing.
He thought that if he destroyed my career, I would do what I always had for the so-called greater good—bow my head and go back to help him save face.
I didn’t contact him.
That afternoon, I hired a top forensic accounting firm to conduct a full audit of our ten years of joint accounts, as well as every related-party expenditure from companies in Graham’s name.
Three days later, Graham cornered me outside my studio.
“Do you really have to do this?” His voice was hoarse. “Ten years of marriage, and over one house you’re going to drag this out until everyone’s reputation is ruined?”
I stopped walking.
“The issue was never the house. It’s that from beginning to end, you were orchestrating a fraud.”
The color drained from his face.
“Graham, when I look at you now, I feel like the last ten years of my life were one meticulously audited lie.”
He swayed on his feet.
He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Like a fish thrown onto the shore, gasping for air.
