He Moved His Lover In I Moved My Money Out Chapter 17
“Objection noted,” my lawyer said evenly. “The witness will answer the question.”
Richard was silent for a long time.
“Yes.”
After that single word fell, the only sound was the rain tapping against the glass.
My lawyer continued. “After Ms. Rothman moved out of the marital home, the municipal arts center suspended her status as lead designer, citing an ‘unstable domestic situation.’ Were you involved in that decision?”
“No.”
“You have long-standing working relationships through the Whitmore Foundation with three members of that project committee. The day before the suspension was issued, did you call two of them?”
Richard’s face changed.
“The foundation has regular dealings with them.”
“Your counsel has already confirmed the call logs. We’re asking about the content of those calls.”
He lifted his water glass, but his fingers were trembling.
Someone off-screen murmured a reminder to him.
Richard closed his eyes.
“Graham asked me to pass along a message. He said Nora was emotionally unstable and might not be able to continue leading the project.”
“Did you believe that was true?”
“I was only passing along the message.”
“After her suspension, what did you hope would happen?”
This time, he didn’t answer right away.
My mentor suddenly set down her teacup.
The sound was light, but Richard startled.
“We thought that if she lost the project, she would go back and talk to Graham.”
I looked at him on the screen.
“So you used my career as leverage.”
Richard avoided my gaze.
“We only wanted to save a marriage.”
“No.” I tapped the suspension notice beside me. “You wanted to save the Whitmore family’s image.”
When the deposition ended, my lawyer asked, “Do you want the transcript sent to the media?”
“No.”
I sent her the email addresses for the arts center committee members and the divorce court judge.
“Send it to the people who are supposed to see it.”
An hour later, the arts center sent me an invitation to an emergency meeting.
