My Fiancé Swapped Places With His Twin At The Altar Chapter 08
“Matteo?”
It was as if Matteo had finally woken from some absurd nightmare, exhaustion etched on his face.
“You’re not well. Stop exhausting yourself.”
A flicker of stiffness passed through Ashley’s eyes, but she lowered her head almost immediately.
“I’m just worried about Bianca.”
Matteo didn’t respond.
He pressed and held the voice message button, his tone hard.
It sounded like a warning to Bianca, but also like an attempt to convince himself.
“If you insist on going out there to suffer, then don’t come back.”
“It’s not like I actually wronged you.”
“This whole thing was just a joke. Did you really have to take it this far?”
“I already gave you a chance. You’re the one who refused it.”
After he sent the message, the screen remained blank.
No read receipt. No reply.
As he stared at the empty space, a cold panic began to creep into him.
It had never been like this before.
No matter how angry Bianca got, she would always message him back eventually.
Now, every word he sent felt like it was sinking into the ocean.
Matteo suddenly stood and headed for the door.
Mr. Moretti frowned. “Where are you going?”
“The airport.”
Isabella panicked.
“It’s this late. What are you going to the airport for? Ashley is still here.”
Ashley, too, looked at him with tear-filled eyes.
“Matteo, don’t go. Bianca’s still angry. She won’t see you.”
Matteo stopped for a moment.
Leaning against the doorframe, he clenched his fingers until his knuckles went white.
After a long moment, he let out a low, humorless laugh.
“She’ll come back.”
Even as he said it, he didn’t sound like he believed it.
By then, I was in Alessio’s car, heading toward the outskirts of London.
The car finally stopped in front of a sprawling country estate.
Wrought-iron gates swung open, and warm yellow light filtered through the shadows of the trees.
The moment I stepped out of the car, I heard a soft meow.
A small orange-and-white kitten emerged from the flowerbeds, rubbed against my ankle, and looked up at me.
I went completely still.
Alessio stood beside me, his voice calm.
“Go on. Take a look.”
I followed him inside.
