“Why did your grandfather fire him back then?” Julien asked.
“The old factory was outsourcing part of its orders to underground workshops that didn’t have fire permits. Paolo refused to sign the inspection forms. He sent photographs to the union.”
“And your grandfather thought he was damaging the brand?”
“Grandfather said he made Whitmore lose face.”
The things that truly shamed the family were hidden in the lining. The person who pointed out the stain was the one they cut away.
I remembered the day of the fire. Paolo had ruined one of his hands to push me out that window. Before the ambulance came, he sat on the curb, pressed a piece of red thread into my palm, and told me never to let any fabric tangle around my feet again.
