Leaving At Last Chapter 15
Silence hung in the air for a few seconds.
Briar raised a hand, removed the towel from his face, and just looked at me.
“You knew I was faking. Why did you still come?”
“My boyfriend doesn’t know you.”
“He was worried, so he came with me to check on you.”
With that, I picked up my bag, turned, and walked out.
I had just reached the door when Briar’s hoarse voice followed me.
“Blair, if I could, I wish this was all just a dream.”
“That when I opened my eyes, we’d still be in medical school, and you’d still be sitting beside me.”
I didn’t turn around.
“Too bad it’s not a dream.”
When I walked out of the bar, Auden was waiting by the curb.
The moment I saw him, my eyes stung.
I threw myself into his arms.
“Been waiting long?”
He didn’t ask a single question. He just smiled, held me tight, and spun me around in one smooth motion.
The wind lifted the hem of my dress, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
All the heaviness from a moment ago scattered into the night.
I buried my face in his chest and laughed for a long time.
Life with Auden was always this easy.
And it was wonderful.
Hand in hand, we walked home.
As we passed a home goods store that was about to close, my eyes landed on a slab of stone.
I stopped in my tracks.
“That’s the one.”
Without a second thought, I ordered it on the spot.
