Shattered Glass Unbroken Soul Chapter 05
When I woke up, my arm was strapped to a hospital bed.
A nurse was leaning over, changing my dressing. She softened her voice when she saw my eyes open.
“You took seven stitches to the forearm. You lost quite a bit of blood. The building security guard heard the glass shatter. He got the super to open your door with the master key and called 911. The ambulance brought you here.”
I stared at the ceiling. It took my brain a few seconds to process everything before I felt the raw, dry ache in my throat.
The nurse handed me my phone.
“I just plugged it in. It’s been ringing non-stop.”
The screen showed dozens of missed calls.
All from Drew.
Piper had also sent several voice messages.
I didn’t click on them.
A mutual friend had sent a video clip.
In the video, Drew sat in a booth at a bar. He was nursing a drink, looking completely relaxed.
“I just spoiled Avery too much. Locking her up for a few hours will remind her who actually treats her well.”
Someone laughed off-camera.
“Did you seriously lock her in?”
Drew leaned back against the cushions.
“I was the one who held her hand through all her panic attacks in the past. Would I really hurt her? She’s just throwing a tantrum. She needs to learn a lesson.”
The video suddenly shook violently.
The mutual friend sent a follow-up text.
*Avery, what happened at your place? Drew answered a call and his face went totally pale. He almost crashed into the door running out.*
I opened our group chat.
Heavy wind blew through the speaker on the first audio message.
Drew’s voice trembled violently.
*”Avery, where are you? Why is there blood all over the floor? I was wrong. I shouldn’t have locked the door. I shouldn’t have taken your pills. Just pick up the phone, please.”*
Sirens wailed in the background of the second message.
*”Avery, please. Just say something. Don’t scare me like this. I know I messed up.”*
Piper’s private message popped up next.
*”Avery, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know your claustrophobia was still that bad. I thought Drew was just trying to scare you. Please don’t ignore me.”*Â
