Regrets Of What Was Lost Chapter 09
When I got home, Savannah had already ordered a table full of takeout.
Spicy wings, pizza—all my favorites.
Whenever I was with her, I felt younger.
She knew how to be playful, how to look at me with that worshipful gaze that always made me feel important.
I hadn’t felt that from Zinnia in a very long time.
The second she heard the door, Savannah ran over to take my coat.
“Sweetheart, how did it go? Did she back down?”
I changed my shoes and sat down at the table.
“There’s only one way forward. I think it’s the only way we can get this done in time.”
Savannah handed me a napkin.
“Tell me.”
I wiped my hands.
“I’ll have someone transfer three hundred thousand to your account, and you buy the house. The rest of the mortgage won’t take more than a few years to pay off.”
The slice of pizza stopped halfway to her mouth.
“What did you say?”
I looked at her, my expression serious.
“The divorce is final in ten days. A million-dollar house isn’t going to sell in this market. You’re the only one who can make this happen.”
The pizza slipped from her fingers and landed on the table.
“You want me to spend a million dollars buying the house you lived in with your ex-wife?”
I took her hand.
“Don’t panic. Just listen to the numbers.
“One million. First, we pay off the six-hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage, leaving four hundred thousand. She and I each get two hundred thousand.
“And the three hundred thousand I’ve transferred to you over time—you can use that for the down payment. After the divorce, I’ll get about a hundred thousand from our joint account. If you do the math, the amount we actually need to finance is only around four hundred thousand. I’ll help you with the payments, and the house will be in your name. Think of it as an early engagement gift from me, okay?”
