He Watched Me Freeze Now He Begs For My Return Chapter 14

By my third month in Chicago, I had fully settled in.

I had a new job and a few new friends. We went out on weekends, visited museums, and no one expected me to smile through their “jokes.” The wreckage of my family in Denver felt like something from another life.

Only Caleb kept reaching out.

At first, his tone was hard.

“How long are you planning to stay in Chicago?”

“You owe me an explanation for what happened between us.”

I read the messages and didn’t reply.

Later, he found out through mutual friends that I’d started at a new company. His texts turned panicked.

“You’ve really decided to stay there?”

“Nora, are you seriously cutting me off for good?”

Later still, the demands turned into apologies.

He said he’d been wrong to let them bully me, and even more wrong to force me to bow to Paige when I begged for help. He brushed it all off as “stupid jokes” and pleaded for me to answer him, even if it was just to curse him out.

I didn’t respond to a single one.

Regret that comes too late doesn’t change the blizzard.

It doesn’t change the choice he made that night.

In the end, I blocked his number and all his social media accounts.
