He Watched Me Freeze Now He Begs For My Return Chapter 16

Caleb didn’t go back to Denver. He rented a short-term apartment near mine.

After that, every morning, he parked downstairs, waiting to drive me to work. I never got in his car. He never tried to stop me, only texting, “Be careful on your way.”

At noon, takeout with my name on it would arrive at the front desk. In the evening, dinner in insulated containers would appear outside my door. He would message me after each delivery, never asking for a reply, as if this restraint were part of his penance.

I knew what he was trying to do.

But every time I saw his face through a car window, all I could think of was that blizzard night. He had sat in a warm room and told me, while I was freezing, to admit defeat to Paige first.

My stomach would turn.

A few coworkers who heard about it were touched. “He followed you all the way to Chicago. He really knows he was wrong. Maybe you should give him a chance?”

I shook my head.

“Knowing he was wrong doesn’t mean I have to forgive him.”

I used to give in every time. But now that I had decided to protect myself, I was never going back.

I didn’t touch a single thing Caleb sent.

I knew exactly what he was doing.

He was trying to use his guilt to hold my future hostage.
