He Terminated My Lease So I Terminated Our Wedding Chapter 06
I didn’t reply to Cass. Instead, I opened our three-person group chat.
I’m still alive.
Owen answered almost instantly.
What hospital are you in? Send me the address. I’ll come get you right now.
Slowly, I typed out a single line.
Whatever I owed Cass for taking me in is paid. We’re even now.
Cass sent a string of crying emojis. Owen kept insisting they hadn’t meant for it to go this far, that they just hadn’t expected the tide to come in so fast.
I didn’t answer.
My first call was to my lawyer. I authorized her to handle the division of our assets and the termination of all wedding contracts. I told her exactly what happened on the island and instructed her to apply for a protective order immediately.
My second call was to the hospital social worker.
When the paperwork came, I signed page after page, formally revoking Owen’s authority as my emergency contact and medical proxy.
After the police finished taking my statement, the doctor recommended I stay for observation. I refused.
Using the last of my available credit, I bought a one-way ticket to Baltimore for that same day and took a car straight to the airport.
Before boarding, a friend sent me another screenshot, this one from a mutual group chat. Someone had asked what Owen had done. He’d replied:
Don’t worry. She’s just emotional. Once she calms down, she’ll realize she has nothing without us. She’ll come back on her own.
I stared at the message for a few seconds, then blocked Owen, Cass, and everyone else who kept messaging to say I was taking things too far.
Then I turned off my phone.
When the gate agent called my boarding group, I knew with perfect clarity for the first time in my life—
where I went next was up to me.Â
