He Terminated My Lease So I Terminated Our Wedding Chapter 13
“Lila!”
His voice chased us through the snow.
Mateo didn’t slow down. He didn’t ask again. He drove steadily through the intersection.
I didn’t turn around.
In the rearview mirror, Owen staggered after the car for a few steps while Cass clung to his arm. He was still shouting something, but his face and his voice were quickly swallowed by the falling snow and passing traffic.
The car merged onto the main road. I took off my sunglasses and looked out the window.
Familiar street corners flashed by, one by one, then fell away behind us.
The property papers were signed.
The ghosts of my past were left behind in the snow.
From this moment on, my history in Boston no longer had any claim on me.
By the time we flew back to Baltimore, night had fallen.
Our rowhouse glowed with warm yellow light. A pot of soup was bubbling on the stove. Mateo had his sleeves rolled up. He turned from the kitchen and asked, “The new pinot noir, or the kombucha you like from the fridge?”
I smiled.
“Kombucha.”
He took out the glass bottle, twisted it open, and handed it to me, a smile in his eyes.
“I’m glad you chose what you actually wanted.”
He tapped his glass lightly against mine.
“That was always your choice. It should never have been a joke.”
