“Remember that time at the mall… when that guy Kyle asked for your number? Do you still have it?”
A few minutes later, she sent me Kyle’s number.
I bought a prepaid burner phone and sent him a text.
[Did you know your sister has a boyfriend?]
Kyle was as generic as his name.
The man himself was a total deadbeat who spent his days mooching off his parents and hitting on girls.
My friend had been so creeped out by him that she’d given him a fake number just to get away.
Kyle was nearly thirty and had never held a steady job or had a serious girlfriend.
His family doted on him, hoping he’d marry a wealthy woman who would finally get his life on track.
Because all their resources went to him, Krystal had never been able to afford the expensive summer arts programs she’d dreamed of.
Eventually, she just gave up.
Kyle replied almost instantly.

I texted back:
[Who I am doesn’t matter. I’m just giving you a friendly heads-up. ]
[Your sister’s new boyfriend comes from money. ]
[You don’t want to miss an opportunity like this.]
Then I sent him Matteo’s address.
Sure enough, the very next day, Kyle showed up at the Romano house with his parents.
I was upstairs doing homework when the shouting started.
