“I don’t know any sister of yours! Get the hell out of my house before I call the police!”
“Go ahead! I’ll tell the cops your son took advantage of my little sister! ”
“Who knows if she’s pregnant? I’m telling you, either your son takes responsibility, or you pay up!”
Mrs. Romano’s shrieks were so loud I could hear them clearly through my window.
She grabbed Krystal, who was trying to shrink into the background.
“You said your parents were business owners! You dared to lie to me?”
She shoved Krystal toward the door.
“Get out! All of you, get out!”
But Kyle’s family had finally found the golden goose. They weren’t about to leave empty-handed.
Kyle’s mother simply dropped to the ground, clung to the doorframe, and started wailing loud enough for the whole neighborhood to hear.
“My daughter has been with your son, and now you want to throw her out? No way! ”
“If you don’t give us ten thousand dollars today, we’re not leaving!”
In the end, someone called the police.
The officers spent what felt like an eternity mediating the standoff.
Finally, Mrs. Romano reluctantly handed over two thousand dollars just to get them to leave.
Before they left, she raised her hand and slapped Krystal across the face.
“Slut!”
Krystal covered her cheek and ran off, sobbing.
Matteo stood in the doorway through the entire ordeal, motionless.
That night, he came to my door.
“Are you satisfied now, Virginia?”
He stared at me, his eyes dark.
“Krystal’s gone. My mom doesn’t suspect you anymore. ”
“Are you happy? ”
“There’s nothing wrong with liking someone, but don’t you think you took this too far?”
