His Fake Proposal Led Me To My Real Husband Chapter 14

“But you watched for four years.”

“So we can’t be friends anymore. Don’t contact me again.”

Her lips trembled.

She lowered her head and gently set the favor box on the floor.

“I’m sorry.”

She left with her head bowed.

I picked up the box.

On the back of the gold paper, a line was written in a shaky, crooked script.

*Becca, I’m sorry. I didn’t dare.*

After the engagement party, Mason didn’t give up.

For four days in a row, he waited downstairs from my office building.

For the first three days, the front desk and security wouldn’t let him up, and I refused to see him. On the fourth day, I left through the garage exit.

After that, he started sending things.

First flowers, then designer bags. Later, he had our old photos made into an album and mailed it to my office.

Tucked inside were two pages of a handwritten letter, the writing unsteady.

I read two lines, skipping over the *I was wrong* and *give me one more chance*.

In the final paragraph, one line was written in small, cramped letters.

*Do you remember the earrings you wore on our first date? I still have the other one.*

I folded the letter and put it back in the envelope without replying.

One weekend, after Julian and I had dinner at my mother’s house, we came out to see Mason downstairs by the apartment building.

He was leaning against his car, seven or eight cigarette butts crushed on the pavement at his feet.

When he saw me with my arm linked through Julian’s, his whole body went rigid.

“Rebecca.”

I didn’t stop.

He hurried after us.

“Give me five minutes.”

I stopped and turned back to look at him.
