His Fake Proposal Led Me To My Real Husband Chapter 15

“Three.”

Mason opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

“Three minutes are up.” I turned to leave.

“Wait!”

He said in a rush, “I know I was wrong.”

“Okay. And?”

“I cut off Tyler and the others. All of them.”

“And?”

“I apologized to your mother.”

“And?”

Mason had no answer.

He looked at me, his eyes a chaotic mix of desperation and confusion.

“What do you want? Just tell me. I’ll do anything.”

“I don’t want anything.”

“Becca…”

“Don’t do this.”

His voice grew rough.

“I’ll change. I can change everything you don’t like about me.”

“You can’t.”

“I can.”

“Mason.”

I cut him off.

“What’s my favorite kind of ravioli? My mother said it in the lounge on the day of the engagement party.”

He froze.

“Lobster ravioli,” Julian answered from beside me.

Mason turned and looked at Julian.

In that instant, the hope on his face evaporated.

His breathing hitched.

“But you used to say it,” he said, his voice shaking.

“You said you only wanted to marry me.”

“You said I was the person you loved most in the world.”

“Mason.”

I looked at him.

“I used to love chocolate cake, too. But every time we passed that bakery, you’d say the line was too long. Eventually, I just stopped wanting it.”

“Do you remember bringing me that chicken soup?”

He nodded immediately.

“The day you brought me that soup, I had a fever of a hundred and four. I ended up calling a car and taking myself to urgent care.”

His tone turned panicked.

“You never told me.”

I let out a breath.

“You never asked.”

He stood there, motionless.

“Mason, nobody stays forever in the place you left them.”

“Go home.”

He dropped into a crouch and covered his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking.

I didn’t look back.

I took Julian’s hand and kept walking.

Behind us came the sharp sound of an impact.

Mason had probably punched his car door.

The alarm blared twice, then fell silent.
