His Fake Proposal Led Me To My Real Husband Chapter 17

She cut the woman off, her voice steady.

“My son was fond of her for four years. He only pursued her after her previous relationship was over.”

“So if that’s what you call pulling strings, then yes—we welcomed her, and only then was she willing to give Julian a chance.”

After the two women had been escorted out, Eleanor added, “Anyone who makes my daughter-in-law uncomfortable tonight is insulting a guest I personally invited.”

I stood in front of the mirror, lipstick in hand.

Eleanor walked over and gently wiped a tiny smudge from the corner of my mouth with her thumb.

Then she lowered her eyes to my dress and frowned.

“Is this too tight at the waist?”

“It’s fine.”

“Have the tailor fix it,” she said.

“If you’re uncomfortable, you say so. You’re the star tonight. The dress should fit you, not the other way around.”

My nose stung.

The first time Mason brought me to meet Patricia, she’d barely given me a second glance.

My palms had been sweating that day, and Mason just laughed and said, “That’s just how my mother is.”

Later, I realized Patricia hadn’t even bothered to remember my name.
