On their wedding night, he had watched Seren sleep, then taken out that photo and stared at it for a long time.
He had promised himself then that he would spend the rest of his life being good to her.
Now, he had become the very person his younger self would have despised most.
I looked down at Cassian.
He was crying, his hands still shaking as he tried to hold on to me.
At last, I spoke, my voice calm and flat.
“The only reason I ever agreed to get back together with you was because of the baby.”
“To be perfectly clear, I never had any intention of starting over with you.”
“You know I don’t tolerate betrayal. Once someone cheats, I don’t go back.”
“Now the baby is gone, and I don’t love you anymore. And we don’t even have a marriage certificate.”
“Your legal wife is Jenna.”
“So, we’re done. There’s nothing left to say.”
I didn’t wait for him to respond. I turned and got into Rhys’s car.
Rhys rolled up the window, shutting out the sound of Cassian’s sobs, and then looked at me.
“Where to?”
“JFK. I want to get away for a while. See something new.”
“Good idea.”
He glanced at me a few times in the rearview mirror. After a moment, he cleared his throat.
“By the way, Seren. I’ve never had a girlfriend. And I still like you.”
“Would you… consider me?”
“Maybe later.”
I waved a hand and put on my headphones.
This time, at least, I was finally leaving for myself.
