His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 27
Victor looked thinner than the last time I’d seen him.
He didn’t come upstairs. We sat in an open meeting area on the first floor, people constantly passing by on the other side of the glass wall.
He pushed the folder toward me.
“It’s a confidentiality agreement.”
I didn’t open it.
“Parker and I are divorced. I have no obligation to keep his team’s secrets.”
“There’s compensation.”
“That doesn’t change my answer.”
Victor clasped his hands together on the table, his knuckles white.
“Madison has already lost her career, and Parker is out of the industry. Who else are you trying to punish?”
“This story isn’t a punishment.”
“Don’t say that. You know what one article can do to a person.”
“I do,” I said, looking him in the eye. “Which is why I will only write what the documents can prove. I won’t write what they can’t.”
He finally opened the folder.
The settlement offer had a lot of zeros.
The condition was that I could never publicly discuss Parker, Madison, or anyone who had ever worked on Parker’s team.
“You’re asking me not to reveal the messages you sent me.”
“That was standard crisis communication.”
“Warning a woman whose address has been leaked that if she speaks out, your lawyers will respond—is that also standard communication?”
Victor’s lips moved, but no sound came out.
“I didn’t know things would go that far.”
