His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 40

My mother looked at me.

“You didn’t use to think that way.”

“I used to treat the number like a guarantee.”

I thought that if I chose a 0, I would never repeat her marriage.

But I still went through lies, betrayal, and divorce.

My ability let me see the truth sooner, but it couldn’t spare me the heartbreak.

My mother reached across the table and took my hand.

“So, are you still afraid of marriage?”

“I don’t know if I’ll ever get married again.”

“That’s not what I asked. I asked if you’re afraid.”

Outside the window, someone rode past on a bicycle, its bell ringing twice.

I thought about it for a long moment.

“Not as afraid as I used to be.”

Because I finally understood that safety isn’t about finding someone who will never change.

No one can see that far ahead.

Real safety is knowing that even if someone else changes, I can still leave, still work, and still take care of myself and the people I love.

My mother nodded.

“That’s enough.”

When we left the restaurant, the owner gave us two small cookies for the road.

My mother stuffed hers into my hand, claiming sweets were bad for her heart.

Five minutes later, she broke off half of my cookie and ate it herself.

We walked slowly through the unfamiliar streets, heading back toward the crowds.

Along the way, I saw a young couple arguing over a map.

The number above the girl’s head was 4. The boy’s was 1.

After a few more words, the boy laughed and handed her the map. She laughed, too, and took his hand.

In the past, I would have tried to guess which one of them was more trustworthy.

Now, I just walked past them.

The numbers hadn’t disappeared.

I could still see every person’s past.

But the past is not a verdict, and a 0 is not a vow.

My mother called my name from up ahead.

I quickened my pace to walk beside her, toward the sunlit square.

This time, no number was choosing my direction for me.

My life was my own.

The End
