The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 17
Hadrian sold the apartment.
During the contract signing, he stopped three times.
When the agent pointed to the signature line, he realized he had written the wrong name.
*Mireille.*
My name was written on the blank paper.
He stared at it for a few seconds, voided the page, and signed again.
After the sale closed, he transferred me my share, along with the two hundred thousand dollars.
I sent the two hundred thousand back.
My note was only one sentence.
*I made that choice myself. I don’t need compensation.*
More than refusing the money, that line left no room for negotiation.
It meant I didn’t even want to settle old debts.
Hadrian flew to Austin that night.
He waited downstairs from my office until the streetlights had dimmed before he finally saw me come out.
There were no bodyguards with him, and the underboss ring was gone from his hand.
“Mireille.”
I stopped.
He held out the tin keepsake box.
“Here. It’s yours.”
“I don’t want it.”
“Our tickets are inside.”
“They’re yours.”
“What about the last one?”
I slid it out from an inner sleeve of my wallet.
The paper had yellowed, the words *Last one* now barely visible.
When Hadrian reached for it, I moved it away.
“I was planning to mail it back to you today.”
His eyes lit up.
The next second, right in front of him, I dropped the ticket into the paper recycling bin by the curb.
“Then I decided there was no point.”
