The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 23

“Get out.”

The smile on Leo’s face faltered.

“I’m just here to say hi. We were all family once. Why make this so formal?”

He set one of the coffees in front of me.

“Mireille, your career’s doing great. You should be over it by now. Hadrian even gave up being underboss for you. Are you really planning to never look back?”

At the conference table sat representatives from head office and the lead photographer.

Everyone heard him.

I didn’t touch the coffee.

“Clause seven of the memorandum of cooperation states that project discussions will not involve the interview subject’s private relationships.”

Cameron slid the document toward Leo.

“You’re not a hotel employee, and you’re not on the interview list. Please leave.”

Leo didn’t look at him. He stared at Hadrian.

“You’re really going to stop me from entering a meeting room now?”

“Yes.”

Hadrian stood and pulled the door open.

“I used to let you cross every boundary. I won’t anymore.”

Leo’s face flushed red.

He walked to the door, then looked back at me.

“The only reason you got this project is because Hadrian’s here, isn’t it?”

I opened the digital magazine on the tablet.

On the screen was the award-winning Austin railway feature from half a year ago.

“The East Coast project was approved before this hotel was even shortlisted,” I said.

“It was selected because head office made the decision based on location and architecture. Neither my name nor Hadrian’s appeared in the blind review materials.”

Leo opened his mouth.

Hadrian didn’t give him a second chance to speak.

The door closed in his face.

The meeting resumed.

Hadrian sat back down and didn’t say a single word unrelated to work for the rest of the meeting.

But that night, Leo posted the Hamptons group photo to a public social media account.

The caption was only one line.

*Some people can leave the inner circle and still come back, riding on the Bellini family’s coattails.*
