The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 32
He handed the microphone back to the host.
He didn’t look at me.
After the event, Emily was waiting by the exit.
She looked thinner than the last time I’d seen her, still wearing the uniform from her part-time restaurant job.
“I was passing by after work.”
“Mm.”
She handed me an envelope.
“I only recently found out about the tuition money you paid for Sarah back then.”
Inside wasn’t an apology letter.
It was a small stack of cash.
“I know this has nothing to do with that tuition, and it’s not my place to repay it for her.”
“This is for the money I used to make you spend on me. I can only start with this much.”
I didn’t take it.
Emily’s hand stayed suspended in the air.
“You still can’t forgive me?”
“Paying me back and forgiveness aren’t the same thing.”
She lowered her head.
I pulled out the top bill and pushed the rest back to her.
“This one was for the exam registration fee you covered for me that year.”
“The rest isn’t documented. I don’t want it.”
Emily looked up, and slowly her eyes turned red.
“Mireille, can I still write to you?”
“Yes.”
“Will you answer?”
“No promises.”
She nodded.
This time, she didn’t ask me for an answer that would make her feel safe.
After she left, Cameron came out of the hall.
“It’s over.”
“Mm.”
“Then can I ask a question that isn’t about work now?”
I looked at him.
“Ask first.”
“Do you want to have dinner with me tomorrow night?”
“A celebration dinner?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
“If you say no, I’ll eat by myself. It won’t affect our next project, and I won’t have our coworkers hold a vote.”
I laughed.
“What time?”
