The night wind hit them the moment they stepped outside, and Chiara instinctively drew her shoulders in.

Sterling opened the passenger door for her.

Only after she was seated did he walk around to the driver’s side.

Once the car had cleared the estate gates, he said, “Don’t attend meals like that alone again. Tell your grandfather to deal with me directly.”

“Got it,” Chiara said softly.

The car turned onto the riverside highway, the dark water reflecting the cold city lights.

Chiara leaned back against the seat, her heartbeat finally starting to slow.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket.

Griffin.

A single line.

*Chiara, I’m sorry.*

She didn’t answer.

Two minutes later, another message came through.

*You asked why I proposed the alliance. I told you I had no explanation. But don’t trust Sterling too quickly.*

Another followed immediately.

*What happened in Paris three years ago was not a coincidence.*

Chiara stared at the screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.

He was messaging her in the middle of the night—not to explain himself, but to warn her away from Sterling.
