The next morning, Sterling’s car was waiting outside the hotel.
After Chiara got in, he handed her a hot coffee and started the engine without a word.
They drove to the Moretti Holdings tower, which also housed Nightfall’s Manhattan offices.
Chiara placed her hand on the scanner, her father’s black wolf insignia flashing on the screen.
Her dormant Moretti inheritance authority, untouched for three years, glowed green.
The elevator shot straight to the top floor.
Griffin was at a Council meeting. Francesca had her standing healer’s appointment every Wednesday morning.
Chiara had two hours.
She pushed open the doors to what had been her father’s office. The space was all Griffin now.
The old wooden desk was gone, replaced by a sleek, modern one. The plant that used to sit by the window had vanished.
“Anything important won’t be in the main files,” Sterling said. “Check the third drawer on the right.”
Chiara pulled it open.
On top lay a single manila folder.
There was no label, only one name penciled in the bottom right corner.

She opened it.
