The Wedding Game That Cost Him Everything Chapter 50

“Promised lodging and medical support will not be canceled.”

“And the shortfall?”

“We use the ordinary donations first.”

The money Tucker had left behind had been gone for years.

What had kept the project alive all this time had always been the money that hospitals and ordinary people put in, bit by bit.

I sent the same financial statement to every partner hospital.

There was no self-pity in it, and no request that they fight anyone on my behalf.

I asked only whether they were willing to keep emergency medical access open for people whose records had already been verified.

The first hospital replied: “Yes.”

Then the second.

One of the temporary housing sites that had suspended cooperation reached out to Chloe again, too.

The person in charge said, “What we’re afraid of isn’t Safe Return.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

There was a long pause.

“We’re afraid that one day, the people who need that door will be us.”

One of the addresses crossed off the wall was added back.

The project still lacked money.

But the door stayed open.

A month later, Tucker’s mother came to Geneva to see me.

She brought no adviser.

And she gave the hospital no advance notice.

When I got off work, she was already sitting in the lobby with only a small suitcase beside her.
