After I Saved Him My CEO Said We Were Strangers Chapter 16
Over the years, I tried dating a few times.
The first was an investment banker.
He was impeccably dressed and spoke with a polished, careful precision.
On our third date, he asked if I wanted to come to his place that weekend and cook dinner together.
I said yes.
But as I stood in the elevator of his apartment building, a wave of wrongness washed over me.
In the end, I pressed the button for the ground floor and left.
The second was the CEO of a tech startup, two years younger than me and vibrating with a terrifying amount of energy.
When I worked late, he would drive to my office and wait for me downstairs.
When I traveled for work, he would book my hotels and make dinner reservations in advance.
He was serious about me.
So serious that, for a moment, I thought maybe I could try.
Until one night, when he had a fever of 102.
I had worked late, and by the time I got to his apartment to check on him, he was curled under the covers, his face flushed bright red.
The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.
I stood by his bed, and the first thought that entered my mind was:
“I have a presentation first thing tomorrow morning. I can’t stay long.”
The second the words were out of my mouth, I froze.
I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I had become incapable of putting anyone before my work.
He didn’t blame me, but he grew distant after that.
The day we broke up, he said, “I don’t think you love me.”
