He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 37

The first weekend after the storm, we went to the ice cream shop.

Maisie ordered strawberry.

Halfway through, she decided she wanted to try my chocolate and, with perfect confidence, scooped a huge bite from my cup.

“Don’t you have your own?”

“But now I want some of yours.”

“Then we have to trade.”

She held out her cup of half-melted ice cream.

“You can have the biggest bite.”

I leaned down and took a spoonful, and she beamed.

In the sunlight, her wrists were bare.

There was no “survivor” wristband, no one telling her who she was supposed to thank.

When the new school year started, Maisie rejoined the soccer team.

She wasn’t the star player.

Sometimes, when it rained, she still froze and looked for me on the sideline.

But she also raised her hand to tell the coach when she needed a break. And once she’d caught her breath, she decided for herself when she was ready to go back on the field.

The second classroom at the art studio was fully booked.

Children came and went under the “No Need to Wait” sign.

Some painted floods.

Some painted locked doors.

Others covered their entire pages in bright, brilliant yellow.
