He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 38

No one told them their art had to have a happy ending.

At the studio’s annual exhibit, Maisie brought out the green soccer journal.

I thought she had finally decided to read Evan’s letter.

Instead, she took the sealed envelope from the back page and handed it to me.

“Mom, can you give this back to the lawyer?”

“You don’t want to read it?”

“No.”

Her voice was calm and certain.

“I used to always want to know why Dad didn’t choose me.”

“But then I realized—that’s his problem. It wasn’t because I wasn’t good enough.”

She opened the journal to the page with the three stick figures.

On the paper, Dad was still holding Sadie’s hand.

Little Maisie was still standing inside her circle.

She didn’t tear out the page.

She just pasted a new sheet of paper next to it.

In the new drawing, the little girl had stepped out of the circle.

Mom was standing up ahead, waiting, but not reaching back to pull her.

Because the little girl was already running toward her, taking big, confident strides.

“What’s this picture called?” I asked.

Maisie picked up a pen and wrote two words at the bottom.

“Going Home.”

When the exhibit ended, we locked up the studio together.

A light rain had begun to fall.

Maisie didn’t freeze. She didn’t look for higher ground.

She just took a yellow umbrella from her backpack, opened it, and tipped it toward me.

“Hurry up, Mom.”

“The pizza’s going to get cold.”

I stepped under the umbrella with her.

She slipped her arm through mine and spent the walk home seriously debating which movie we should watch after dinner.

Streetlights blinked on one by one, reflecting in the wet pavement.

We hadn’t forgotten the past.

We just no longer had to stand still, waiting for someone who was never coming back.

The light ahead turned green.

Maisie tugged my hand, and together, we walked toward home.

This time, we didn’t look back.

The End
