My Fake Death Was The Punchline To His Cruel Joke Chapter 04

Then my phone rang. It was Camille.

“Still breathing?” she purred, her voice dripping with mockery. “How was test ninety-nine? I added the walnut oil myself. It’s a shame you’re so hard to kill.”

My hand tightened on the bedsheet.

Her laughter tinkled through the phone.

“Next week’s family foundation gala is the real show. Test one hundred. Bennett’s going to announce your ‘divorce’ and then propose to me.”

She let that sink in.

“Oh, and that design studio? The one that never existed? He signed the shares over to me. Think of it as a parting gift.”

A cold fire burned in my chest, but I managed a smile.

“That’s assuming he can find me,” I said, and hung up.

Thirty minutes later, the nurse reappeared. “A Mr. Shaw and his lawyer are requesting five minutes of your time. Do you want to see him?”

I nodded.

A few minutes later, Bennett walked in, his eyes red-rimmed.

“Mara, I swear, I didn’t know there was actual walnut oil in the cake.”

“I’m going to Denver to recover,” I cut in, my voice flat.

His face fell.

“No. I’ll take care of you.”

“I don’t need you.”

He stared at me for a long moment, then took a step back.

“Fine. I’ll book a private jet. I’ll take you there myself.”

“No need. I’m on UA 1476 tomorrow morning at nine.”

I’d invented the flight number on the spot.

He had just finished typing it into his phone when it began to ring.
